Alvechurch AFA close their 2023/2024 season in style and move back to the summit.

With their final game of the season upon them, Church knew only a win would take them back to the top. The title race out of their hands, but a win would mean they've done everything in their power this year. When they look back on the season, there can be a lot of proud moments including smashing last year's points tally of 42pts and most likely, eclipsing their position finish from last season, too.

THE MATCH:
Ant Hasker's side were on the search for their 15th win of this Birmingham and District Football League season when they took on the basement side, Sutton Select. In the reverse fixture, Church ran out 4-2 winners on home turf and were looking to complete the double over their opponents.

It took a bit of time in the first-half for Church to settle down and start creating clear-cut chances. But as we crossed the 25-minute mark, a thunderous Kyle Mullally strike from distance came back off the bar and fortunately for the home side, away to safety.

Just six minutes later, Ben Davis on the lookout for an unprecedented 28th goal of the season, unselfishly slid the ball past the challenges coming towards him for Zay Clarke arriving at the far stick but he couldn't quite generate the power on the shot to re-direct it goalwards.

However, with just a minute remaining of the half, the Select defence was finally breached and the deadlock was eventually broken. It was Davis to Clarke on 32 minutes, but this time it was Clarke to Davis on 44 minutes. Clarke managed to beat the offside trap before being forced a little wider than he would have hoped. He then produced an audacious backheel towards the far corner only to see Davis arrive on the scene and sweep the ball home.

HALF-TIME: SUTTON SELECT 0-1 ALVECHURCH

The second-half saw Church assert their dominance on the contest but also to enhance their goal difference credentials in the process.

However, there was an opportunity at the beginning of the half for the home side, who as you would expect wanted to come out and find an equaliser. They were denied that chance by a fantastic tackle from Jack Marson at the back to preserve the clean sheet that the Church defence's display warranted.

On 64 minutes, Church wrapped up the three points though. Emmanuel Hoto was introduced from the bench and one of his very first touches on the ball was a superb defence-splitting ball as he touched it around the corner allowing Davis to latch onto and slot it into the bottom right-hand corner for his 29th goal of the season.

Louie Clifford, making his debut for the AFA, was making things happen on the pitch and came very close moments later to bagging his first goal but the keeper more than matched his stunning effort from distance.

The third goal of the encounter came with just 20 minutes remaining as Davis raced away who clipped a cross to the awaiting Clarke. Clarke composed himself before taking the strike on himself from an acute angle which saw the keeper parry the effort out but only as far as Clifford, who drilled his effort hard and low with his weaker right foot into the corner to complete a professional display from the in-form Alvechurch side.

FULL-TIME: SUTTON SELECT 0-3 ALVECHURCH

So, that's now a FIFTH season that the young Church group have completed together and they are constantly always evolving and taking the standards to new heights. Next season has the makings of another special season for the squad. But for now, a well deserved break for the players and they will regroup and go again in the summer.
