Church brought down to earth with a bump
After a great start to the season, Church were given a lesson in finishing by a more determined Stamford side that thoroughly deserved their victory.
Church found themselves in a hole early on in this game, brought about by some uncharacteristically poor defending, that allowed a really solid looking Stamford side to take an iron grip on the three points.
A first minute chance for Church saw a neat flick on, and Dubidat through with a clear sight of goal, but the striker's instincts failed to kick in, and after delaying too long, his attempted cross was easily blocked by a retreating defender.
Back at the other end, Stamford worked the ball well into the box, and, from eight yards out, Adams drilled the ball wide under pressure from Carter.
But Carter turned villain on 10 minutes when a Stamford corner was flapped at by Keranovic, and the defender intervened but only to power a header into the top corner of his own net.
The Church defence looked nervous, admittedly under great pressure from the Stamford front line, and after giving the ball cheaply away, Carter was relieved to see Adams' effort from range deflected for another corner.
The next best opening for Church came on 19 minutes when March burst clear down the right flank, but after tracking menacingly into the visitors' box, the angle became too tight, and his attempt on goal flew wide of the far angle of the goal.
Church conceded again on 22 minutes, victims of a soft goal that came about after the ball had bounced about in the Church box and had failed to be cleared with any conviction. Smith stretches to steer the ball through a crowd of players into the far corner with Keranovic scurrying late to attempt to intercept.
There were still glimpses of Church's attacking quality to be seen, non more so than on 31 when in typical counter attack style, Ceesay works the ball across from the right flank, and a March glancing header drifts agonisingly wide of the far post.
But the visiting defence remained resolute to see the first half out to a successful, and for them, a satisfying conclusion.

Another golden opportunity was wasted after 79' when Turton took a quick free kick spotting Dubidat in space, but with only the keeper to beat he hit it stratight at the keepers kegs for a corner.
