Church suffer derby defeat
Alvechurch fell out of the play-off places with a disappointing loss to rivals Redditch United.
Church came into the game unbeaten in four games but were off the pace as Redditch picked up a deserved three points. Despite this though, they did create the first chance of the game, with Andre Landell flashing a shot wide of the goal.
From there though Redditch took over. A long ball up field rolled through to striker Harry White and he made no mistake firing past Matthew Sargeant in the Alvechurch goal.Former Alvechurch player Jamie Ashmore then fired over, before a long throw-in led to White grabbing his second goal of the game.
Despite this, Alvechurch responded immediately with Landell superbly firing in from 25 yards out. This led to a resurgence for Ian Long’s side as Lee Chilton was denied by Adam Whitehouse and Ash Carter fired over. This pressure eventually paid off, as Chilton worked his way into the box and fired into the bottom corner for his second goal in as many games since re-joining the club; and ensuring that both side's went into half-time level.
Despite the comeback, Redditch again were the better team in the second half and soon took the lead. Richard Batchalor got on the end of a Robbie Bunn's free-kick to head Paul Smith’s side back in front.
Redditch then continued to control the game and sealed the win, when Bunn tricked his way into the Alvechurch box and scored to seal the win.
The defeat was deserved with the Church putting in a performance not rarely seen and they will be looking to bounce back against Tamworth on Saturday.
