The hosts strike late but penalty shoot-out disappointment sees Church exit the cup.

Alvechurch U18s LR' journey in the Colin Lowe Memorial Cup comes to an end after a disappointing penalty shoot-out at The Hayes.

THE MATCH:
The referee sounded his whistle and the tie was underway at a very mild evening setting in West Heath.

It took 15 minutes for the first clear-cut chance(s) of the game. The home side came close as the first opportunity saw Kielan Naughton put his header wide before Bailey Kirby and Harrison Dodd linked up on the left-hand side. The former received the ball back and unleashed an effort that went over the top.

Just six minutes later, Church were left wondering how the back of the net wasn't rippling. Suleman Maqsood, restored to the XI, won the ball back in the Stourbridge final third before racing away and having the whole goal to aim at but his chipped effort didn't quite have the direction on it to squeeze into the far corner, drifting past the post.

Would Church rue that chance?

On 24 minutes, the answer to that question was well and truly answered. The ball was inch-perfect from the defender allowing the striker to race in behind and smash it beyond a helpless Matthew Horton to open the scoring for Stourbridge.

Set-back for the home side and it got worse only a matter of moments as the young Glassboys' gained more belief and momentum was with them. The ball was given away cheaply in the heart of midfield before a fantastic pass allowed for time and room for the striker to smash beyond Horton into the far corner. In the blink of an eye, two down and a mountain to climb...

Reaction needed. Even at two goals down, the hosts continued to be brave and work an opening to find a route back into the semi-final. On 36 minutes, they got one back! Naughton worked a short corner well before firing it right across the face of goal and ghosting in at the back post was Suleman - who made up for his earlier miss - to give Church a foothold heading into the break.

HALF-TIME: ALVECHURCH 1-2 STOURBRIDGE

Could Church raise their performance level and complete a remarkable turnaround?

Ten minutes into an opening and frantic second-half period, Church had a glorious chance to level proceedings. A free-kick was floated in with pace and precision allowing Vano Biashivili a free reign at the back post but the ball got stuck under his feet and gave the Stourbridge lads to get back in to make a challenge.

However, despite the hosts' early pressure in the second-half, Stourbridge were handed a golden opportunity to make it three as the referee pointed the spot after a clash of legs inside the area. Having already saved a penalty this season at Halesowen, Horton was tasked with keeping Church' hopes alive in the last four stage - in which he did as he saved the spot kick with his legs!

In a mad five-minute spell, Church were left with heads in hands.

On 65 minutes, had the ball been squared to the far post, they would have been level but the shot was opted to be the option allowing the goalkeeper to make a good block and maintain the Stour lead. Only moments later, there was the wildest of goal-mouth scrambles I believe I have ever seen...

The ball was smashed along the floor into the danger area, the defender managed to get there ahead of Daniele Reka before the keeper pushed it wide but not wide enough allowing Dodd to race onto it. The young full-back saw his effort cannon back off the post before Reka came storming in to smash it home but his effort was closed down. After that, four Church players came racing in to get the touch to take it over the line - but the away defence were refusing to be beaten as multiple blocks were thrown in there and then eventually the goalkeeper was eventually able to palm it to safety. CRAZY!

Was it going to be one of them nights?

On 76 minutes and 84 minutes, Church' frustrations continued to intensify as these chances going to waste. A header on the 76th minute mark was glanced on and dropped wide of the mark. Six minutes until the end, the home side saw the opposite goalkeeper produce a world-class save. Ricardo Jarrett's cross was whipped in and Reka saw his effort with his knees somehow clawed out from the keeper - who moved his feet rapidly to scramble across the line and get a hand to it.

As the game's intensity rose, tempers were starting to flare. The away side saw one of their coaches and their captain both sent off in the space of 30 seconds.

SEVEN MINUTES ADDED...

Could Church take the game to penalties?

There was still time and more importantly, hope. In the 95th minute, the home side struck the heaviest of blows as the in-form Daniele Reka was set away and he kept his cool before stroking the ball into the far corner to save the day for Alvechurch and bag his 30th goal of the season in all competitions.

FULL-TIME: ALVECHURCH 2-2 STOURBRIDGE

So, as per FA rules, we headed to a penalty shoot-out.

Church were hoping to galvanise themselves and rid the memories of their previous penalty shoot-out which saw them crash out of the FA Youth Cup back in September. But, it wasn't to be their night as three penalty saves from the opposition goalkeeper saw Stourbridge through to the final and a second semi-final exit in the space of two years for an unlucky Church side.
