BRIEF INTRODUCTION:
Alvechurch are prepared to walk out into their second consecutive Worcestershire FA Invitational Senior Cup final at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium, home of Malvern Town Football Club. The cup holders are set to face the challenge of Worcester City Football Club as we aim to retain our crown.
Church won the final last season at the home of Evesham United against Evesham United. After a tense and nervy encounter, the game ended level (0-0) after the 90 minutes of regulation time meaning we headed to penalties. From the resulting spot kicks, a combination of Ronnie Hollingshead's three penalty saves, plus us converting, we were Champions.
HOW WE HAVE GOT TO THE FINAL AGAIN:
This season, Church' route to the final hasn't been an easy one. We started off travelling to the beaten finalists for a rematch. At the time, Jimmy Fry's men had Omari Sterling-James to thank in their 1-0 win earlier on in the season against the Robins. His finish in the 9th minute ensured safe passage into the quarter-final stage.
Into the quarter-finals and Church were drawn to host Stourbridge FC for meeting number three of four for the season. Having looked on course to vanish from the competition, 2-0 down at the 52nd minute mark, and down to 10-men, new manager Tim Flowers worked his magic. Shay Willock's introduction paid dividends. Willock's first strike opened the door for a fightback before adding to his tally to grab the equaliser late on.
The game went to penalties, and thanks to Dale Eve's heroics plus Alvechurch' calmness from 12 yards, it ensured we grabbed a spot into the final four of the cup for the second campaign running. Flowers' men produced "the best 10-man performance he's ever seen". We agreed, a fantastic comeback from the lads that night. The win meant we would travel over to Bromsgrove Sporting for the second time in the season.
Following their 2-0 win at the UK Electrical Stadium already this year in Tim Flowers' second game in charge, there was a huge confidence that they could get the job done again at another local neighbours' stadium. Archie Crowther's header in the 22nd minute of the game was the difference between the two Worcestershire clubs despite a late onslaught from the home team. Church stood strong to secure passage into back-to-back finals.
From there, following news that Worcester City had beaten their noisy neighbours and local rivals Worcester Raiders on derby day, Church are set to do battle with City on April 9th at the home of Malvern Town on the artificial 3G pitch.
