In a bid to avoid the drop, it's now or never for the Church as they have relegation looming over them if they fail to take nine points from their final nine available to them. A huge, huge few weeks as they aim to leave their destiny in their own hands rather than in fate's hands and having to wait anxiously to see what other results fall in their favour. Time to take the control and ensure that they aren't looking over their shoulders with sweat dripping down their foreheads.
HOW IT UNFOLDED:
It was exactly the start they craved early on too, to get them up and running in such a pivotal game at the foot of the table. Jess Wallace delivered a wonderful pass from the left boot of hers to allow Alisha Sheridan to break clear of the visiting defence. All she had to do was compose herself as she looked to finish off. She drove forward before delicately passing the ball into the far bottom left-hand corner to give Alvechurch the lead.
On 6 minutes, it should have been two and very well could have been. Wallace with the magic from her left boot was causing all sorts of problems with her long-range passing and vision to pick out a team-mate. Sheridan made the same run but was forced this time a little wider than she would have hoped for. The forward was unselfish though as she picked out the stand-in captain of the team at the moment, Katie Jamieson, who whipped the ball towards goal forcing the goalkeeper into a brilliant save.
Ten minutes after Jamieson's chance, it was 2-0. Just what the doctor ordered for Davis' side, who were in the groove to establish a healthy gap towards the bottom. Charlotte Taylor clipped a ball over to Beth Grady on the opposite flank. Our number nine in recent weeks curled a dangerous ball into the box, the defender stuck out a leg to divert it away and flew into the back of the net to double the advantage.
The hosts really in control of the encounter and aiming for even more in-front of goal. Abby Dadson to Wallace to Taylor to Libby Stokes to Grady to Jamieson. What a goal it almost was. Back to front in a flash. Our skipper had the opportunity to make it three following a wonderful passage of play between our players, but the shot was saved low down to her right and ensured that the score-line didn't increase.
Pressure was mounting as they looked to kill off the contest. Knowle failing to get any real sight of goal or any real momentum in the game, Church absolutely relentless in their pursuit of a third goal. The same combination, Wallace to Sheridan was the difference in the first half and that same duo made it 3-0. Another beautifully-weighted ball over the top fell for Sheridan. Our forward beat the onrushing goalkeeper to the ball and poked it beyond her to take the game away from the visiting side.
On minute 37, it could have been four. The returning Charlotte Leedham dug out a sensational cross to the back post for Stokes, who brought it under her control before hitting the strike from 15 yards out, making the goalkeeper make another important but fantastic save.
HT: ALVECHURCH 3-0 KNOWLE
A ruthless first half, Church just needed to replicate it and ensure there was no let-up with the fire in their belly.
Eleven minutes after the restart and Church had their fourth whilst Alisha had the match ball. Jamieson played a neat intricate ball through the gaping Knowle backline for Sheridan to run onto. Our top goal-machine then produced an audacious piece of skill to turn away from her marker, and smashing it into the back of the visitors' net.
The changes now being rang by Davis as he started to take off some of his more senior players as the match was dead and buried. It allowed him to rotate and freshen things up.
With 21 minutes left, Dadson was called into a magnificent stop. A brilliant looping and dipping effort from the edge of the box from the Knowle winger was heading for the top corner but our number one was at full stretch to keep out the effort, somehow tipping it over the top of the crossbar rather than underneath it.
However, the wait for a clean sheet continued as from the resulting corner, a beautifully cushioned header at the near post flew into the far-hand corner to give the travelling side something to celebrate. Nothing more than a consolation at this point of the contest.
A great reaction from the home team though as almost immediately after the consolation, the Church restored their four-goal lead as substitute Lara Stevens added her name to the score board. Two introductions from the bench had the desired affect. Imogen Butler slid Stevens through on goal, she rounded the goalkeeper before placing the ball into an empty and unguarded net to make it 5-1.
