It had been a week of big change at Lye Meadow. The defeat at Leiston in midweek meant that Church had recorded just one point from the last twenty one.
Manager Jimmy Fry has gone, and player coach Richard Batchelor is landed with temporary control of first team affairs.
His first team showed two changes with Willis and Wragg being replaced in the starting eleven by Richards and Batchelor himself.
Chasetown have a good pedigree, and also a few familiar faces. Ex Church players Luke Yates, Dan O'Callaghan and Matt Sargeant in the squad.
A downpour just before the game added a sickness to the surface and contributed greatly to the tone of the game. Competitive yes, at times a little feisty, but probably not a thirteen yellow cards game!
The visitors made the best of their possession in the early stages, and it was Church keeper Hollingshead that was the busier. On 8 minutes the ball bounces around the Church box near the goal, and culminates in a close range header from Fenton that is smuggled behind by the Church number one.
From the ensuing corner Church initially clear the danger before Wilding unleashes a smart volley on target through a crowded box, forcing Hollingshead into a smart reflex save low to his left.
Church are under a bit of pressure here, and it got a whole lot worse on 19 minutes when Sephton nudged Butlin in the back inside the box as they challenged for a high ball dropping to the ground, and the Chasetown player hits the deck giving the referee the opportunity to award a penalty.
O'Callaghan takes the spot kick but despite striking it well is aghast to see Hollingshead save superbly with a full stretch dive to his left.
At the other end on 29 minutes there is chaos in the Chasetown defence that should have been punished; the ball falls fortuitously at the feet of Sullivan a few yards out, but the Church player's touch takes the ball wide of the gaping goal.
On the stroke of half time the Church goal is under attack again as first Hollingshead pushes out a bouncing shot, and the follow up shot is deflected behind for a corner.
From the corner Butlin lashes a loose ball over.
Half time : Alvechurch 0 Chasetown 0
The second half was much more disjointed with a proliferation of substitutions and stoppages punished by the increasing tally of yellow cards.
The game is scrappy and devoid of any quality chances and seems to be heading inexorably towards penalties.
A rare shot on target on 80 minutes sees a Wakefield attempt from 25 yards ; it has venom but is straight at keeper Pond, and then Church are offered a chance with a free kick just outside the box as the clock ticks into the fifth minute of stoppage time, but Willis' effort is well off target.
And so to penalties:
Immediate advantage for Church as Hollingshead saves from Taylor. Wakefield scores to put Church in the driving seat.
The next seven spot kicks are converted (with Barnett, Willis and Dyer successful for Church) to leave Sephton with the opportunity to finish the tie with the last of the regulation five kicks apiece.
He does so send Church through to the 3rd Round by a 5-4 penalty margin.
