Record Breaking Church Are Penalty Kings Again

Record Breaking Church Are Penalty Kings Again

Alan Deakin16 Dec - 09:22

Church advance to the 4th Round of the FA Trophy after a fourth successive penalty shootout win.

A topsy turvy game of football, that saw Church comfortable in possession but two goals down after just a quarter of an hour, but Alfreton could not cope with the chance of pace and intensity in the second, and the Lye Meadow side deservedly clawed their way back into the game to signal another penalty shootout victory.

Two counters from the visitors yielded them two goals in the first quarter hour of the game, leaving Church stunned despite beginning the game on the front foot.
An almighty scramble in the Alfreton box in the 2nd minute saw the ball finally hacked away after a decisive Pearce header had threatened the goal, and on 6 minutes, from distance, Willis fires a long range effort on target, but keeper Burgoynes recovers in time to gather the ball deep in his area.

Three minutes later Church concede a sucker goal when Anderson swung the ball into the box from wide right, finding Beck in a good position in front of goal, but as the danger appeared to have dissipated as the ball seemed stuck under his body, the prostrate forward had the sense to sweep the eventually loose ball trickling over the line into a somewhat empty net.

Five minutes later Alfreton doubled their lead after Dugmore was caught in possession some 35 yards from goal, and McCann took possession and moved on towards goal before slotting the ball past the advancing Evans.

A response was needed and it duly came as first Sullivan squared a free kick across the face of the Alfreton goal setting up Ilesamni to sweep a shot just wide. and then on 25 minutes a rasping drive from Ngandu is beaten away by Burgoyne; it is much better from Church now.

Just before the half hour another opening as Dugmore delivers a ball to the back post, but a Church touch is marginally late as the ball is smuggled away for a corner.

Alfreton prove to be dangerous again on the transition with a loose ball in the area pounced upon, and Evans is forced to turn teh ball around the post to prevent what might have been a game deciding third goal.

Two goals down at the break there needs to be something special from Church in the second half to turn this around.
And the first special moment comes on 57 minutes when Ngandu and Bavanganga combine well down the right flank, before Ngandu cuts inside and arrows an unstoppable shot from just outside the box, through a crowded area which finds the back of the net off the inside of the far post to cut the arrears.

Nine minutes later the turnaround was complete when Ilesanmi got on the end of a deftly delivered through ball, and the Church front man showed great composure to slide the ball pat Burgoyne from 15 yards.
Its a huge comeback, and no less than Church deserve.

The win could have been secured on 76 minutes when Ngandu broke and provided a diagonal ball for Dugan deep in the Alfreton box, but the Church substitute was inches away from a connection that could have diverted the ball in from close range.

The penalty shootout ultimately proved to be a straightforward one for Church as Ilesanmi, Willis and Sephton all converted, but only Ligendza for the visitors with Beck and Perritt both hitting the bar with penalties number 1 and 3.
That left Louis Clifford with the chance to win the tie, which he duly took to give Church an unassailable 4-1 margin.

record breaking for Church as they reach the 4th Round for the first time.
Record breaking for the competition as Church record a competition record fourth (successive) penalty shoot out victory.
