The road to Suffolk is always a long one, and the road back is a tough one to travel after another fruitless afternoon for Church.
The 1-0 scoreline tells nothing of the balance of the game, and the fact that the home side named their keeper as the Man of the Match tells you something about what they thought about the nature of their win.
Locked together just below mid-table, three points for either side would offer some welcome respite and close the gap to teh top six rather than see the gap at the bottom narrow ominously.
It was to prove to be the latter scenario for Church, who despite having the best three chances of the game, failed to punish the home side, who indeed did punish their visitors with their single real opportunity of the whole ninety minutes.
Not a welcome result, but the performance was not that bad, even if Church were lying somewhat deep for too long in the game, without really being under much pressure.
Sudbury were unbeaten at home in the league this season after narrowly escaping the drop last time out, but the game was decided on a mistake on 36 minutes that severely dented Church's aspirations in the match. The chaos that led to the goal was an uncharacteristic mistake from keeper Hollingshead, who mis-kicked coming well out of his area to intercept a long through ball. Allen recovered the possession, but Church seemed to have got away with the error as there seemed to be enough cover developing to snuff any danger out, but he is able to feed the ball to Neal deep in the box, and managing to stay onside the Sudbury number none was not going to spurn the chance to put his side ahead, and he slots in.
On another day, Barnett would have cushioned his 61st minute effort from close range comfortably in instead of over the bar after a superb cross from Dyer after he had beaten his full back on the right flank for the umpteenth time. Equally, ten minutes later it's the same scenario Dyer is around the back again, and Barnett unmarked heads goalward from close range, but the contact is not clean enough to put keeper Bradbrook in serious trouble, and he blocks the point blank effort at the foot of his post when he should have been picking it out of the net. And if Archie Crowther had been able to sort his feet out quicker in the Sudbury box in a promising central position, he might have delivered the ball on target to trouble Bradbrook instead of endangering the corner flag.
For their part, Church faced few threats on their goal, and Hollingshead dealt with the main one on 80 minutes well when Neal was through but his angled shot was beaten away by the Church keeper at the near post
Church had enjoyed a significant spell of pressure on the home goal, but the elusive breakthrough had not come, as the home defence, well marshalled by Henshaw who was imperious in the air, saw the game out.
More bad news for Church came on 85 minutes when centre back Solademi was red carded for a challenge in the centre circle, and with Wakefield also picking up a yellow card that sees him facing a one match ban the selection problems for manager Fry mount.
Church have only two wins in the last seven games, and both of these have been in the FA Trophy.
And with Church the lowest scorers in the league, with only 11 goals from 13 games, but having also conceded the second lowest total (11) the problem is there for all to see.
