It was form side Kettering (five wins a day a draw in the last six) against visitors Church, who were at the other end of the spectrum with only one point gained out of the last fifteen available.
But in a poor first half there was nothing to choose between the two although Church keeper Evans was the busier, with two quality saves that kept his clean sheet intact. On 22 minutes he makes an excellent save to his left to beat away a shot from 25 yards out, and ten minutes later a shot from the edge of the box is dealt with similarly to prevent the ball heading for the top corner. In between, a good blocking challenge from Bavanganga six yards out had sent the ball for a corner. The in swinging ball was then flicked on and York headed the ball off target from close in when he should have done better.
It was smash and grab from Church in the second half, built on a resolute defensive performance, and no key mistakes that have cost dearly recently.
The opening goal of the game came on 51 minutes, courtesy of quick feet from Wakefield to track into the heart of the Kettering box, and clip the ball past the advancing keeper to find Miles on hand a couple of yards out to have the simple task of steering the ball in from very close range.
Kettering respond, and Williams blazes the ball off target from a good position – the story of the home side’s night it seems, as their frustration grows.
Church are doing a good job in containing the home side to long range efforts and half chances now, and concentration levels remain high as a free kick from wide left is well defended by Miles and a great palm away by Evans clears the danger for now.
Seven minutes of stoppage time to negotiate – and the visitors do it with style.
The icing on the cake came in stoppage time when Miles raced into the Kettering box to gain possession of a ball he had no right to, and after turning and cutting back inside the full back, he arrowed an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner to seal the win, and cap an impressive personal performance in the process.
