Cast your mind back to 14th October.
A win for Church at home to Quorn would have catapulted them to the summit. The 3-4 defeat that night heralded an horrendous run for Church that registered six successive league defeats, with no goals scored, until a 2-0 win over Worcester City on the 25th November. A run that saw Church plummet to 18th place in the table.
That win was the last league win recorded until this visit to Leicestershire. Doubly true in context then ; a well overdue win, and also against a side with playoff aspirations.
It was an aggressive start from the home side, which saw captain Fyfe almost put his side ahead within the first thirty seconds. His effort was blocked after the ball was pulled back from the by-line as Church looked to be marginally slow to settle.
Church were then enjoying good possession, but with no real openings carved out.
Bello made an outstanding block to prevent the Quorn from falling behind, with both sides creating chances at either end as the game set itself up to be a competitive one.
On 16 minutes Sullivan ghosted around the back of the defensive line, and dinking the ball to the far post found Perry, who drilled the ball into the side netting.
It was a cagey affair, with both teams struggling to create anything clear-cut as defensive structures remained stubborn, keeping goal-scoring opportunities to a minimum. Quorn came close to opening the scoring on two occasions around the 25-minute mark. The first chance came from an inviting ball in from Master which flashed across the six-yard box but failed to meet the boot of a red shirt.
Shortly after, Master found himself in a similar position and this time delivered a floated cross which found the rising Jacob Fenton, whose header flashed wide.
Half Time: Quorn 0 Alvechurch 0
Quorn started the second half in similar fashion, coming agonisingly close to taking the lead. The best chance of the game fell to Noble, whose header struck the left post before being cleared.
However, it was Alvechurch who broke the deadlock to take a 1–0 lead through Sullivan. A great move through the centre started with Abbey winning possession, and feeding Dugmore, who threads the ball through to Sullivan on the edge of the box, and taking the ball on in his stride, Sullivan drilled the ball in from fifteen yards.
Church nearly doubled their advantage shortly after when Ngandu produced an outside-of-the-boot effort which curled into the side netting.
Quorn responded with a chance of their own as Goodson fired a powerful effort into the side of the net while attempting to drag his side back into the game.
Church’s defence held out whilst they were still a threat on the break.
Goalkeeper Adam Harrison was called into action to make a strong save from a thunderous effort by Dugmore.
Goodson then stood over a dangerous free kick on the right-hand side of the penalty area, debating whether to shoot or cross. His whipped delivery was powerfully struck but was palmed away by Evans.
The six minutes of added time were rather frenetic. A corner in the 93rd minute flashed just wide, agonisingly close for the Reds as they searched for a late leveller.
