In the sunshine in Leicester, Church were hoping to bounce back from their first home defeat of the season on Bank Holiday Monday but the side from Leicester had other ideas. From the fans' perspective, a new-look Church side, they were hoping for a repeat of the famous 22/23 run that saw us face EFL opposition. But those dreams became faint hopes in the end.
HOW IT UNFOLDED:
The magic of the Emirates FA Cup was back and for one of these two teams, it was the start of their journey on the road to Wembley.
The step four side's magic and dreams kicked in earlier than anyone would have expected though. Beyond their wildest dreams, the home side took the lead inside 22 seconds. Church asleep. Anstey alive and kicking. Having failed to clear and not win the knock-down, the hosts drove forward in numbers. A brilliant ball over the top freed Drew Lowe into the channel, he had time and space to pick out former Church favourite Leo Brown in the middle. His tap-in on the line handed Anstey the lead.
Shell-shocked. Would this kick Church into gear?
The visitors response was positive. Having netted his first goal for the club a fortnight ago, Wakefield thought he had his second goal for the football club on 17 minutes. Pearce's clipped ball into the channel released Wakefield, but his effort was brilliantly blocked by the Anstey defender.
Chances were still being handed to the home side though. On 22 minutes, Church were let off the hook. Brown, fresh from the opening goal of the afternoon, battled well and found himself in acres of space from the knock-down. One v one with Charlie Woods. But our goalkeeper came out on top with a BIG save to deny the former Church attacker.
As we approached the quarter mark of the contest, Church levelled proceedings. Having had a corner at one end, Ammar Dyer's clearance up the field, left Dylan Hadley one on one with the Anstey defender. However, Hadley was second favourite to actually get there but a slip from the Anstey man left our forward with the whole half to himself. Could he keep his composure? You bet he could. Hadley's strike went through the goalkeeper's legs and into the net. Right back in it.
Right back in it. Right back out of it. Identical. 26 seconds later, and the home side were celebrating once again. Having seen a ball come in from out wide, Woods and Dyer got into a tangle allowing Kyle Tomlin in the centre to smash home the loose ball and put the side from the division below right back in the driving seat.
Got away with it once, you can't afford to do it twice. Truly punished.
Time to go again. Church found the powers of recovery once, could they summon up their powers again?
Almost! Ethan Sephton's pass into Wakefield saw him chop past the defender's challenge before driving towards goal. In on goal... SAVED! The Anstey goalkeeper comes out on top after Kieran's strike was well saved by the feet and that was that as we headed into the interval behind and lots of work to do if we are to claim a spot in the second-round qualifying.
HALF-TIME: ANSTEY NOMADS 2-1 ALVECHURCH
A chance to hit the reset button and settle themselves down at the break. Take the instructions on-board and try to turn their fortunes around otherwise a disappointing FA Cup exit was on the cards.
Game. Set. Match. Already.
Full of confidence, Anstey announced their arrival to this year's FA Cup as they added a third. Having found the net for the second goal, Tomlins's lay-off was inch-perfect for James Tague. Tague wrapped his foot around the ball and the striker crashed off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net before Woods could react.
There were moments for Church to reduce the deficit in the second period and some big opportunities to try salvage a replay.
The first of two big second half moments. On 71 minutes, Dyer slipped the ball through for Hadley, who managed to beat the offside trap and tuck the ball home. But his effort was right at the goalkeeper before the home side got back in shape to clear the danger. The second saw Sweeney clean through on goal. You would bet your life on him scoring that type of chance. But his effort rolled the wrong side of the mark.
Church escaped being humiliated further. Leo Brown's effort inside the area with eight minutes remaining slammed off the top of the crossbar before Callum Sullivan was able to clear the Church lines. That was the final opportunity of the encounter and Anstey secure a safe passage into the second-round qualifying, where they will travel to Derbyshire to take on Mickleover Sports Football Club.
Good luck to our opponents in the next round, who were worthy winners.
FULL-TIME: ANSTEY NOMADS 3-1 ALVECHURCH
A disappointing performance from the Church, who crash out of the Emirates FA Cup at an early stage for the second season running and any hopes of a repeat of a famous run were over before they started.
