Bryan Allcott's side kept up the pressure to finish in second-place. After Stourbridge' late, late derby victory at Halesowen Town earlier in the evening, it meant that Darryl Knight's side won the league taking the place of Bedworth United as Champions and it means that it is a straight shoot-out between Kidderminster Harriers and Alvechurch now to see who can be runners-up in the MFYL Southern Premier Division.
Alvechurch will be hugely disappointed with how the season has ended up for them, having reeled off 10 wins in a row at the very beginning of the campaign and huge ambitions that they could be set up for a wonderful season. Having lost the cup final days before their final home game of the season, a season of learning now comes into play for the youngsters.
HOW IT UNFOLDED:
A fast and electric start to the contest saw both teams race to take the lead.
5 minutes into the encounter, Alvechurch hit the front and got their noses in-front. A lofted ball over the top of the defence from the left boot of Kyron Creswick was latched onto by striker Evangel Oppong, who got their ahead of the goalkeeper and chipped it over him. The ball crossed the white line and we had our lead on home turf!
A frantic start as mentioned before saw both sides have chances at both ends to either put daylight between the teams or level things up. The visitors nearly levelled just one minute after we cashed in for the lead as a shot flashed past the woodwork. Four minutes later, a snapshot at the far post was brilliantly blocked by left-back Harrison Dodd.
After an eventful start to the contest that also saw three Church shots whistle wide of the mark or well stopped by the goalkeeper, Inkberrow raced down the other end and gobbled up the golden opportunity that presented itself. A mistake in midfield saw us give the ball away cheaply. The captain found his striker in space, he was baring down on goal before smashing it hard and low across goal into the far corner to bring the visitors all square.
The home team went close right on the verge of the half-time whistle but the shot from the right-boot of Tom Mawdsley was comfortably taken in his stride in order to keep the score-line at parity as we headed into the interval at honors even.
HALF-TIME: ALVECHURCH 1-1 INKBERROW
Some stern words were said at half-time in order to get the reaction that was needed after an underwhelming first-half display from The Church.
It didn't take long either for that reaction to kick in as Allcott's team were back ahead just minutes into the second period. Creswick switched the play to his midfield partner Louie Clifford. He took the ball in his stride before skipping past the challenges being thrown in from the travelling side. The midfield maestro then unleashed an effort that was too hot to handle for the goalkeeper, who palmed it away to his left. Oppong followed in but the angle was too tight for a shot, so he opted to backheel it into the path of Joseph Kwarteng, who came onto it and smashed it into the far corner.
Two became three five minutes later as the 18's looked rejuvenated and themselves early into the second half. Clifford again at the centre of things slipped the ball through the heart of the Inkberrow defence for Oppong to get himself onto. This time, he rounded the goalkeeper having won the footrace to get to the ball before tucking it home into an unguarded net to give us a two-goal cushion.
Now, it was all about could Church keep their composure and add to the score-line?
It wasn't to be as the away side found themselves a lifeline with 20 minutes to play in this one. The ball squirmed through our backline allowing the striker to ghost in behind. He got there ahead of our goalkeeper and was brought down inside the area leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot. From the dead-ball situation, the captain took responsibility and curled it home into the bottom right-hand corner sending Howe the wrong way and it was game on again.
Church being pulled apart now as they looked to maintain their lead. With five minutes left in the contest, the away team had a major chance to load the box and complete the fightback. After persistently saying "no foul, no foul", Church gave a free-kick away in a really dangerous area out wide. The ball was whipped in with real pace and power that caused massive panic in the 18-yard box, and that panic lead to the equalizing goal as we failed to clear our lines leaving the the visiting players to race in and squeeze it over the line.
The lead wiped out. Gone within a matter of minutes. Heading for a point rather than three.
Three minutes left on the clock for Alvechurch to do anything about it. Their final home game of the season ending in a rather negative way and not a way that they would have hoped for when taking the lead. McKia Morris off the bench fed the ball through to Joseph Hemming, who in-turn managed to feed the ball through to Kwarteng. With his dancing feet, he chopped inside and fired in a driven shot that clipped the inside of the post on the way in to seal the deal and the three points!
Late drama, aye?
Their second 4-3 win in a row at home. They love entertainment. They love to get pulses and hearts racing.
